IPC 604.8

This is a violation regardless of the fixture ratings. The International Plumbing Code limits static water pressure at a fixture supply to 80 psi, and where the supply pressure exceeds that, an approved pressure reducing valve is required. Fixture ratings are not the point โ€” high static pressure drives water hammer, accelerates wear on every valve and supply stop in the zone, causes noise, and wastes water at every draw. This is why tall buildings are broken into pressure zones with PRV stations rather than run as a single riser.

IPC 604.8 (the 80 psi objective; the gauge itself is specification, not code)

A PRV station without a downstream gauge cannot be set or verified โ€” there is no way to confirm the zone is under the 80 psi limit of IPC 604.8, or to detect a PRV that has failed open. Know the boundary though: no model plumbing code actually mandates the gauge. It is required by good practice and by most project specifications, and IPC 604.8 is the objective it lets you verify, not the section that requires it.

IPC 604.8 / ASME A112.26

A single PRV with no bypass means the entire residential zone loses water every time the valve is serviced. The IPC doesn't mandate duplex stations โ€” this is a project-specification and high-rise best-practice requirement: two PRVs in parallel with isolation valves so one can be rebuilt while the other carries the zone. Know the difference between what code requires and what the spec you bid requires โ€” both get you red-tagged on this job.

Lead solder is prohibited on any pipe or fitting in a potable water system. Only lead-free solder (0.2% maximum lead content) may be used per the Safe Drinking Water Act and plumbing codes.

IPC 607.3

A PRV is a closed-system-forming device: once it is in the line, water heated by a storage water heater downstream has nowhere to expand back to. IPC 607.3 requires thermal expansion control where a storage water heater is supplied through a pressure reducing valve, check valve or backflow preventer. Note the trigger โ€” it is the water heater, not the PRV alone, that creates the requirement. In UPC jurisdictions the parallel rule is UPC 608.2, which calls for an expansion tank downstream of the regulator.
